Just fitted a 1.5TB hard drive

For years my photos have been all over the place, on 2 hard drives plus other external drives. A 1.5TB drive at under £50 seemed a good idea & I have now fitted it in place of the 500GB d-drive. All I have to do now is try & get them all sorted. At least I have several spare drives now to keep copies of all the photos.

Improved the train photo web site for mobiles

I’ve merged the test site & my SVR timetable into a working site. It’s still early days & I can’t test it on anything other than my own cheap mobile but it appears to work without problems. The images can be made to appear almost full screen on the mobile, and when set to low quality an image only takes about 5kb to download, instead of approximately 40kb at full resolution.

There won’t be any “new” photos on it, as all images will be from my exiting galleries. If you have a mobile, give it a try, pass the link on to a friend for their opinion. I’m not trying to score a high number of “hits”, as they aren’t counted – just wondering if it is of interest to people, as I’m sure not everybody has a pc at home to use.

If you look at it on your pc, it is very basic, but that is what is needed for a mobile.

The dreaded computer failure

My laptop packed up on Monday morning. When I switched it on, 1 long bleep & 2 short bleeps and nothing displayed on the screen. Still under warranty so gone for repair.

Had to set up the old desktop pc to deal with e-mails, so still stumbling along from day to day.

T-mobile Vairy Text mobile ‘phone

Just bought one of these. I’m no expert on these things – but it was cheap & it works. I have no need for anything fancy, as long as I can e-mail & access the internet if I need to when I’m out.

£40 to buy the ‘phone, including £10 credit & 6 months internet access, can’t be bad.

It has taken me a while to set it up & get used to how everything works. Now you know why there haven’t been many posting recently!!! Must be getting old??

RSS feeds

Following a recent comment about RSS feeds not working, I tried to find out more about them. My laptop, with Vista & Windows Mail cannot be set up for RSS feeds, but would be if updated to Windows Live Mail, but my motto is – if it ain’t broke, leave well alone. The strange thing is, I have a Linux netbook which can accept RSS feed e-mails and they seem to come through without a problem.

The feeds seem to be updating in my Firefox bookmarks, so maybe it was one of those occasional problems of a computer system throwing a wobbly somewhere (using technical terms!)

Changing to new host in a day or two!!!

This has been a long job. Over 4Gb of data had to be uploaded, which amounts to about 70,000 files.

KC’s album & the Midlands album have been uploaded and seem to be working with the new host, and I should have sharpos-world ready tonight. Then to make sure no e-mails get lost during the changeover.

Mustn’t forget this blog & the messageboard have still to be set up & tested, so I’d better get on with it…

New host for web sites

Still working on this. Most of the files have been copied across, but just part of one of the galleries took about 36 hours of continuous ftp uploading.

Soon I will alter the dns settings for one of my minor domains – and if that works I will be one step nearer transferring the galleries.

Planning to change web host soon

My hosting charges for the web sites are too expensive for me, so it is time for a change – trouble is, there are so many hosts & it is not easy to decide which to use. After several days of checking adverts & reviews, I chose one. Didn’t turn out as I expected, so trying another – fortunately this one is looking better.

It will take me weeks to copy across all the files as they total around 4Gb of data, good job I’m not on a dial-up connection! So far, KC’s gallery has been set up with the new host, and is working correctly. Before I can actually start using the new host, the other galleries will have to be transferred, so it will be a few weeks yet.

In theory, you shouldn’t notice any difference, the addresses of the links will stay the same and everything should appear as it does now. The photos on the new host seem to load at about the same speed as my present host, but even if they are slightly slower it should barely be noticeable. What does matter is the money I am saving!!!

Anway, there is plenty of web space, so room for many more 1000’s of photos……..

More on the Blog update

Nothing is simple these days, well, not for me. I’ve set up at test blog & installed version 2.8.3 using a MySQL 5 database and then imported the postings from the current blog. Also installed a later version of the R755 theme.

At the moment the text looks a different style & size, just to confuse me, but hopefully I can learn how to change such things. In the next day or so I will make a copy what will be the old blog and replace it with one using the newer software.
