Wrong side of midnight again

Nothing to do with trains this time. Trying to sort out external hard drives full of old files & many backups of photos. If I had a pound for every time I’d tried to be organised – I’d be a rich man.

Still shuffling things around on computer desk which is as untidy as ever – think I’ll keep the external drives in a cupboard somewhere & just plug ’em in when I need to.

May even set up the old slide scanner again, see if I can find any good old photos. Probably loads of old ones, but not many good ones.

Had a good “play” with Minibook pc today

It takes a bit of getting used to, you know where all the usual keys are on your regular pc, but with a smaller keyboard & slightly different layout it can be confusing.

Today I managed to connect to the Internet whilst on the train, downloaded e-mails & browsed web sites. One thing to avoid is using the internet in tunnels, obvious really! You don’t get a good connection.

Checking my mobile broadband usage, it has only cost 38p so far. I think this proves a pay as you go package is suitable for me. I don’t know much about internet phones, but they seemed very expensive, not only to buy but monthly usage costs as well. £10 lasted me 6 months on my cheapo payg ‘phone from Asda, and the 1gb of data (cost £15) on my Vodafone usb modem should also keep me going for a few months.

All I need now is some sunny weather, some worthwhile trains to go and see locally, and the opportunity to get out for a few hours.

Glad I kept width to less than 800 pixels

Anything more than 800 would not have fitted on the screen of this minibook that I am using to post this.

Extra columns could make the blog look more impressive & involve less scrolling up & down the page, if using a wide screen pc, but not everybody does.

At least now, if I am sat patiently waiting for a special train to appear, I can pass away the time typing away on this keyboard posting to the blog, or reading/writing e-mails.

CnMlifestyle CnMbook (Minibook from Maplin)

Over the last few weeks I have been pondering costs & practicalities of accessing the internet when away from home. Wherever I go, people seem to have them, but they seem so expensive! I don’t really need one, but as a birthday is looming on the horizon & nobody has offered to buy me a new car or steam loco, my sights have had to be set rather lower.

Reading articles in mags about some of the smaller devices (not ‘phones) they seemed a lot of money for something with a small screen, poor keypad and only wifi access. I wanted something a little bigger, but still easy to carry around, then I came across the Minibook sold at Maplin. There seem to be several similar models, another being the Elonex oneT. Looking at reviews on the internet and youtube it seemed quite useful.

So, a trip to my local Maplin & I was soon back home to “play” with it. Another “headache” was mobile internet access, studying form on prices, suppliers & how much quota I would need in a month, pay as you go seemed best for me. No point in paying a lot each month for a high quota which I don’t use.

Armed with a Vodafone K3565 usb “dongle”, I was soon able to access the internet & send/receive e-mails. It did involve a bit of head-scratching, as other people seemed to have problems with that model of dongle, but I got it sussed very quickly.

To prove a point, I even managed to post a message on my blog after seeing a train today, whilst sat in the car. Computer speed is not fast, but I don’t need speed, not much storage, but I don’t need that either. No ‘phone – well I’ve got my payg mobile in my pocket, the 10 quid credit on it lasted 6 months!! No camera, why do I need one in a mobile ‘phone – I’ve got a proper camera.

Each to their own, my 17″ laptop at home will do the bulk of the work & the 7″ minibook will cope if I need access when I’m out.

An uneventful day

Nothing exciting today, rubbing down skirting board, walkies round the park with KC & a bit of tidying up on the computer.

Also sent some Class 47 photos to sulzerpower.com

At least an entry on the calendar for the day, if nothing else!

Blog appearance modified again

I searched around for a new “theme” that would hopefully fit within an 800 pixel screen. The majority of themes try to fit in more on a page, or add another sidebar – which I don’t really need. Shows that I’m thinking of people who don’t have a fancy modern widescreen display!

This new theme is easier to modify than the previous one, well, for a novice like me, and I have worked out how to add RSS feeds – which could be quite useful.

Modifying appearance of blog

Spent some time today trying to understand how a blog can be customised. All seems a bit confusing at first, but I did manage to widen the layout so that a 500px image would display properly.

Also worked out how to add my favourite yellow colour around the blog. Trouble is, while I’m puzzling over all this – nothing else gets done!

Acronis – for backing up files & hard drives

In the March edition of Personal Computer World magazine, the cd contains a free version of Acronis True Image 10 software. I bought the version 10 software some time ago & have found it very useful for recovering files from backups after hard drive problems. I don’t know if the free version is exactly the same, but for the price of the magazine (3.99) it is a bargain.
