Custom Google “Search” for all my sites

The search facilities in the galleries are good, but only work for the gallery you are viewing, so this search will cover all of my sites:-

Replacing my old html sites with new WordPress site

Yes, I’m aware of missing photo captions & all that sort of thing in the galleries, but something that has been bugging me for ages is the state of the old html sites that link to/from the gallery albums. They were never properly fixed after the hacking incident some years ago, and probably before then many of the links did not work.

So, I spent an evening trying to understand how Joomla works. I installed it with sample sites, but didn’t find any templates I was happy with. Then I couldn’t understand how to build my own site, so decided to stay with WordPress.

Rather than mess around with this blog I decided to start another installation of WordPress and base it on pages, rather than blog “posts”. The new site will act as an index to all the gallery albums, along with a few details about the photos in the album.

Many hours have been spent “experimenting” but I think I have a format that will work. At least it will be easier than updating the old style html sites and I can even do the work on any pc – not just the one on which the web site software was installed.

I have also installed a “plugin” which should make it easier to access with a mobile ‘phone. To make the pages download faster there will not be any images, as there are plenty of those in this blog and the galleries. I have included a link to Vidahost, as I’m pleased with their hosting services!

You will notice I have another domain name to use – it made it easier for me whan I changed hosts. Finally, as it has only just been started, only 3 proper links so far – to the first 3 miniature railway albums, but at least you can see how it looks.

Sharpo’s Blog in 35 different languages!!!!!

Only started on this late last night, but have since found there is a “plugin” for WordPress blogs which enables foreign visitors to select the language of their choice.

On the right-hand side of the page, above the calendar, is a “translate to” option with a drop-down menu showing translations available. English is preset, obviously, but I have tried a couple of the other European languages and they look as if they have been translated without a problem – not that I can read what it says!

Had a quick look at Chinese, but in Firefox that didn’t look right, no better in IE, but nothing is perfect!!

Wonder if there will be any feedback on this????

SVR 9th October

After a full day on the Railway the previous day, things had to be more “normal” on Saturday, meaning a walk to Arley station. Whilst walking by the river, 43106 & the resident DMU were seen passing by. Then at the station, 5164 & 5764 were seen hauling trains, also 150001 on a return journey from Bridgnorth. Finally, the Ecclesbourne bubble cars M79900 & M55006 were seen working a private charter to Highley.

Field of poppies – photo.

On the way to the SVR today we passed this field just before parking the car for our walk to the station. Our plan had been to walk along the river bank, but I decided to walk back to the field for a few photos first. Good job I did, as later in the day it was very cloudy and not so good for photography.

Lots more photos of the poppy field taken on the 16th June

Just replaced the belt on my old Hotpoint 9306 tumble dryer

It packed up a couple of days ago, the fan worked & it blew hot air – but the drum didn’t turn. Must be the belt or drive motor, I thought. Should be easy to fix, says he hopefully! Took the back off, saw a fan, but no sign of a drive belt. I was stumped!

Searched the internet, others had asked how to replace the belt, but there were no answers as to how it was done. So, find more screws to undo & have a poke around. In the end, I only managed to access the “insides” by easing open the whole front of the dryer & having a look inside. I could see the drive for the belt was taken from the shaft which also drove the fan. Fortunately I was able to get a replacement belt & with much struggling managed to fit the belt round the drum and tension pulleys and onto the drive shaft.

Turning the fan blades by hand showed that the drum would also rotate again, then put it all back together, finally, plug in, light blue touch paper & retire (no, forget that bit) meant to say – turn timer to start it & hope it works.

Yes, it now works. Belt was £8 and considerably cheaper than a new tumble dryer!

I’m trying a sitemap for the “pages” on the blog

The standard sitemap only lists the “posts”, but a plugin is available which can be set to list “pages”.

Hopefully this will be useful, but as with the other sitemap – I don’t know if it automatically updates itself.

Update 296. Locos on the move for SVR Spring Steam Reunion Gala, 04/03/10

D8059 & D8188 were in charge & brought 6695 & 5764 from Bridgnorth to Bewdley, returning with 43106, 46443, 61994 & 7812. It was a stroke of luck that this all happened at lunchtime, otherwise I would have missed it all. 7802 is also seen and 5786 is in the background in some of the shots
