A quick trip to Stafford and back to see the first passenger train hauled by a Class 88, 1Z88 Euston – Carlisle. Also a couple of 90s on 4M27 Coatbridge – Daventry.
After two earlier visits during the day, I was back again for another freight hauled by 66114. Couldn’t read any Voyager numbers but other units were 172214, 1723334, 170502, 153354, 172219 & 172221.
The Lickey was closed and Cross Country trains and the occasional freight were sent via the Dark Side. These trains were filmed on a couple of visits to the station during the day. Numbers I could read are:- 172221, 170638, 170522, 66183, 66057, 172332, 43366, 43285, 170518, 170101, DR98909, DR98959, 43321, 43357, not forgetting some Voyagers.
I haven’t time to add photos to the galleries at the moment so this is just a posting for the video.
My day started at Old Hill with 66113 on 6P04 Kidderminster – Crewe Basford Hall. Only just got to the station in time to see it. Then off to Arley to film 60163 & 2857. After that, near the old Rifle Range Halt to see 60163 & 46100. Then at Kidderminster, 4 x 66s in a convoy, 66114, 66169, 66051 & 66238 on 0N44 Bescot – Margam. Royal Scot can be heard running round in the background and soon after is seen departing with a train to Bridgnorth. Final clip shows the diesel depot with a Class 50 in the background.
What a lovely surprise, I walked to the station expecting to see the NMT on the test train, but it was top & tail 37s, just like the previous month. Didn’t get bowled either. 1Q15 Derby – Swansea.

Another visit to Kidderminster to see a couple of trains. The bonus was D2960 on a shunting move and also 66021 on the empty steel train from Round Oak

It was dark, but 37s on a test train, not to be missed. 1Q16 Swansea – Derby. It was following close behind a stopping train, probably previous signals on amber so it was approaching slowly in case the Cradley signal was red. Once the driver got a clear view of the amber signal the 37s made a great noise as they accelerated through the station, only to shut off soon after passing through the station. Sounded great on the video!!

A visit to Wolverhampton to see the 20s, the 66 was a surprise bonus. The other train I had planned to see was one of the Class 196 on test runs, that will be in another post.

This video shows the other trains filmed at Tyseley. DR98979 & DR98920, 172220, and 172345 are the numbers, not listed above, of the “less interesting” trains.
As yet I haven’t started on the photos from videos, they will be seen in a later post.
Nothing much to see today, but there was a unit on test runs on the Stratford line. I was hoping it would be one of the other Class 196 units – but it turned out to be the first one I saw months ago at Cradley Heath.
As far as I know, this was the first real test run in the UK for this new class, Tyseley to Hereford and return. I was surprised it actually stopped at Cradley, but it enabled me to cross over to the other platform to get a better view of it, and I wasn’t bowled!!
